5 Must Watch TV Series

I’ve not updated you guys on the most recent must watch TV, that is not to say I haven’t been watching it (trust me I have), it has just gotten to the point where I don’t even know where to start. With shows like Bridgerton and The Marvellous Mrs Maisel coming back, I thought now would be the perfect time to highlight some of my most recent favourites to fill the gap.

Euphoria

Now I never thought I would start watching this, I am not one to give in to over hyped shows in the fear I will be majorly let down. However, I have succumbed to Euphoria and I think I am glad I did.

Don’t get me wrong, it is not quite what I expected; it is dark, heavy and extremely graphic. However, it deals with powerful and important themes correctly, in fact it is probably one of the only teen/young adult productions that I have encountered where I have not seen women bashing other women, the main character getting the girl and the larger women not fitting in with the ‘popular’ group because of their weight. It is well considered and wonderfully shot and the score is particularly impressive.

Just be warned, you may leave watching it emotionally scarred.

Available on Sky/NowTv and Hulu

Gossip Girl (2021)

Yes, you read that correctly, Gossip Girl has made a return. The first part of season one was released in August of 2021, with not much in the way of a conversation around the show, largely, I think there was more to say around it being rebooted than when it actually came to everyone’s TV’s. Yet, the second part of season 1 was just released in early January and I think it is official my guilty pleasure watch. Especially because the first part of season 1 was filled with cheesy one liners, an over use of social media and a Gossip Girl which really would make Dan Humphrey reconsider his lasting legacy. However, it is still filled with New York’s high society, scandal and a load of unsolicited rumours. You just have to get used to its new format.

I would say that I probably would have stopped watching if I didn’t know that season 1 was split into two parts. The level of cheese was a bit much for my liking, but I actually think it redeemed itself in the second part.

So why not form your own opinion on the scandalous lives of the Upper East Side? You can catch all the episodes on BBCiPlayer.

Around the World in 80 Days

Around the World in 80 Days is a show I started watching when I was home for Christmas. I must admit I have not actually finished it yet but I was that impressed with it, I couldn’t not include it! The setting and costumes are extremely impressive and the level of detail is to be commended. I mean anything with David Tenant in it will always grab my attention but the show well surpassed my expectations. It is of course set on the novel by Jules Verne and there are rumours it has been commissioned for a second season. This period drama has the charm and pace of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes, so if you are looking for a bit of adventure on your TV screen, then this is the show for you.

You can catch all the episodes on BBCiPlayer.

Cheer (S2)

Now I am not sure if I am going to get ridiculed for including this one but if you’d like an insight into high profile colleges in American for Cheer then this is the show for you. Bear in mind, I have no interest in gymnastics, cheer or anything of that calibre. However, I do enjoy seeing the athletic programmes in a different part of the world and a good documentary series is always up my street. Netflix released series 1 in January 2020 and it took the world by storm. These cheerleaders and their coach Monica from Navarro College were catapulted into stardom but that was not without its drawbacks. Season 2 goes into the fame and scandal of the show, particularly Jeremy Harris and his arrest on pornography charges by the FBI where he was sued by two 14 year olds for sexual abuse. It also highlights their rival Trinity Valley College and does not shy away from highlighting the competitive and personal matters of life as a cheerleader.

I was particularly impressed with season 2 and its ability to sensitively deal with the people they encouraged and brought to light in season 1 and also the wider issues of sexual abuse in cheer and gymnastics.

Filled with ‘full-outs’, arguments, tough training schedules and more ‘tea’ than one can count, season 2 of the hit show is just as much of a rollercoaster as the first one.

You can catch both season 1 and 2 on Netflix.

Emily in Paris (S2)

I was tempted to write a whole blog post dedicated to Emily in Paris when the second season was released. I mean the questionable fashion choices, relationship struggles and singing ambitions were at a whole other level in this season. But I think it won me over. I mean the show made several headlines when it was first released for its depiction of France but I think now when you understand the angle with which its coming from (it is clearly satirical in its setting), you can appreciate the show all the more. At least that’s what I have understood, I have come to terms with it and can now appreciate it for what it is – a lighthearted show that is good to switch my brain off to. It is called a comedy drama series for a reason!

Plus the new addition of Lucien Laviscount as Alfie and a much stronger – and well deserved storyline – for Mindy Chen who plays Ashley Park, makes the second season all the better.

You can watch both seasons on Netflix.

Now I think that is probably all the cheesy TV I can input in one sitting! Sometimes you just need to get hooked on some melodramatic TV, am I right? What were your thoughts on the above shows if you have watched them? If not, what will you be watching first? let me know in the comments.

Enjoy your weekend, and I am sorry in advance if it is filled with copious amounts of TV.

Lots of love,

xoxo
